DUTIES: At the full performance level, the
incumbent will operate a super conductive magnetic resonance
unit to perform all MRI procedures, develop new techniques,
define optimal protocols, and devise alternative ways to
visualize pathology within the patient, coordinate (with
radiologist and physicist) the most ideal parameters to be used
for the patient examination, position the patient in the
examining unit, monitor the patient through all phases, and then
remove the patient upon completion of the data acquisition. The
incumbent will perform: technical operation and maintenance of
the computer and associated hardware; clinical analysis of data
recorded by the computer; and safety checks on patients,
employees, and visitors (to comply with FDA safety standards),
assist in the preparation of procedure manuals, in the
development of research protocols and maintenance of records,
and in the development of training programs for new MRI
technologists and other personnel. The incumbent will be
responsible for maintaining the following items: operations log;
maintenance and service reports; files on patients; computer
data; technical parameters of each exam; archive of MRI images;
and inventory of lab, medical, and computer supplies.
Interaction with the following individuals will be necessary on
a regular basis: physician scientists, physicists, and clinical
and administrative personnel (to coordinate future day
availability for patient exams); and computer programmers,
manufacturers, and technical design engineers (to assist in the
calibration and trouble-shooting of malfunctions in all
equipment associated with the MRI unit). Providing patient care
that is appropriate to the cognitive, emotional, and
chronological maturation needs of the adult and/or geriatric
patient is a great responsibility of the incumbent and he/she
must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide
this service, in addition to the knowledge of changes that are
associated with aging. The incumbent will perform other duties,
as assigned.

The incumbent serves as the Blood Bank Specialist at the VA
Sacramento Medical Center. The incumbent will be assigned
specialized and complex laboratory tasks beyond providing
patient test results. Provides authoritative advice and
consultation for more markedly difficult, complex, unique,
and/or emerging tests requiring special knowledge.
Conducts studies and recommends changes to correct deficiencies
and improve the transfusion service. Advises all
organizational levels on various aspects of blood banking,
including the appropriateness of specific tests/blood products
and takes into consideration the clinical context and usefulness
of the test information. Analyzes emerging trends and
technology and adopts appropriate methods and testing.
Recommends new/replacement instrumentation. Designs work flow to
accomplish objectives in the Blood Bank. Applies laws, policies
and precedents, regulatory, licensing, and accrediting
requirements to establish, monitor, and maintain blood bank
testing. Maintains process control in the blood bank
through a multifaceted quality assurance program. Gathers and
reviews transfusion data and makes recommendations to the
Director in each unusual transfusion episode. Monitors
timeliness of cross matches, transportation of products, and
transfusion to patients. Compiles discrepancies and
notifies laboratory or nursing supervision of any outliers.
Reviews Blood Bank and Nursing Service data and presents results
to the Transfusion Committee. Identifies quality assurance
monitors and indicators for transfusion practices. Reviews PALMS
and Nursing procedures and policies relating to transfusion
practices and assists with updating as needed. Insures
compliance with all accrediting agency regulations for
transfusion practices. Composes FDA, CAP, and VA reports
and submits following director’s review. Resolves
problems/concerns from hospital staff and physicians regarding
transfusion practices. Identifies training needs
appropriate for the type and complexity of the Blood Banking
services performed. Provides effective and professional
training to medical technicians, medical technologists,
physician residents, and others as needed. Assures that
staff is trained and in compliance with safety guidelines.

Educate patient on need for daily oral health and fluoride
treatment. Develop teaching aids such as exhibits and
displays to stimulate behavioral changes and to improve the
level of oral health. Instruct patients at chair side in
oral hygiene, brushing, flossing techniques, and periodontal
techniques. Removes overhanging margins of fillings, and
reduces sharp edges of fractured teeth. Polishes and
finishes amalgam restorations. Regularly instructs nurses
and nursing assistants in the proper techniques of oral hygiene
to be applied to bedridden, handicapped, disabled, and
chronically ill patients.
